Which Wilson brother was the drummer for The Beach Boys?

The story behind the answer

Dennis Wilson was the drummer for The Beach Boys.

Dennis was the middle of the three Wilson brothers who founded the group, alongside Brian and Carl. Unlike the other original members, he was the only dedicated surfer, and his lifestyle helped inspire the band’s early California image. His interest in surfing also helped prompt the group’s first song, “Surfin’,” which Brian Wilson and Mike Love wrote after Dennis suggested the subject.

Dennis began taking drum lessons at Hawthorne High School in 1960. In the early lineup, Brian played bass, Carl played lead guitar, and Dennis played drums. Dennis performed on the group’s first studio album, Surfin’ Safari, and played on several important recordings, including “I Get Around,” “Fun, Fun, Fun,” and “Don’t Worry Baby.”

A frequent misconception is that Dennis never played on the records because Brian sometimes hired session drummers, including Hal Blaine, for studio work. Dennis’s drumming technique was limited, and his availability varied, but he still played on many Beach Boys recordings.

Dennis later became an increasingly important singer and songwriter. His best-known composition is “Forever,” and his acclaimed 1977 solo album was Pacific Ocean Blue.
