Hang On to Your Ego
Answer
Hang On to Your Ego
“Hang On to Your Ego” is the alternate title associated with “I Know There’s an Answer.”
The Beach Boys recorded the song during the 1966 sessions for Pet Sounds. Its earlier version carried the more provocative title “Hang On to Your Ego” and used lyrics that referred more directly to psychedelic drug experiences and the fear of losing one’s identity.
For the final Pet Sounds release, the lyrics were revised and the song was retitled “I Know There’s an Answer.” The verses remained related, but the chorus changed substantially, shifting the emphasis away from the original drug-centered wording. The released album version is therefore normally identified by the newer title.
The alternate version became widely known when an earlier recording appeared as a bonus track on the 1990 Pet Sounds CD reissue. That history explains why both titles appear in discographies and fan discussions. It is not a separate unrelated composition, although the two versions differ in lyrics and presentation.
