Hawthorne, California, is The Beach Boys’ hometown, where the Wilson brothers grew up.
Brian, Carl, and Dennis Wilson lived with their family in Hawthorne, a city in the southwestern Los Angeles County region. Brian and his brothers began developing their close vocal harmonies there, while their cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine became part of the musical circle that eventually formed the Beach Boys.
The group started performing locally in 1961. Before becoming The Beach Boys, the fledgling band briefly used the name The Pendletones, a reference to the popular woolen shirts associated with Southern California surf culture. Dennis Wilson’s interest in surfing helped steer the group toward songs about beaches, cars, and youth culture, even though the Wilson family’s home base was inland Hawthorne rather than a beach city.
A common mix-up is choosing Santa Monica, Malibu, or Long Beach because those places fit the band’s California image. Hawthorne is the historically correct answer: it is the city of origin listed for the band and the community where the Wilson brothers spent their formative years.
