Which White Star Line ship served as the troopship HMT Olympic during World War I?

The story behind the answer

RMS Olympic served as the troopship HMT Olympic during World War I.

Olympic was the lead ship of the White Star Line’s Olympic class and entered service in 1911. After the outbreak of World War I, the British government requisitioned her for wartime duties. She was converted to carry troops and was officially designated HMT Olympic, with HMT meaning His Majesty’s Transport.

The ship transported tens of thousands of soldiers and also assisted other vessels. In September 1915, Olympic rescued survivors from the British troopship HMS Audacious after it struck a mine off the northern coast of Ireland. This wartime service helped distinguish Olympic from her more famous sister Titanic, which sank on its maiden voyage in 1912.

Olympic returned to civilian service after the war and continued sailing until 1935. She was later scrapped. The ship is sometimes called “Old Reliable” because she completed a long commercial and wartime career without suffering the fate of Titanic or Britannic.
