SS Rotterdam served as Holland America Line’s flagship from 1959 until 1971.
The ship was launched in 1958 and entered service in September 1959. Built for Holland America Line, Rotterdam was designed for both scheduled transatlantic crossings and cruising. Her interiors combined modern mid-century design with artwork and craftsmanship intended to represent Dutch maritime tradition.
Rotterdam was the final great liner built for Holland America Line. As jet aircraft made scheduled Atlantic crossings faster and more competitive, the company increasingly shifted its ships toward cruising. In 1971, Rotterdam ended regular transatlantic service and later operated primarily as a cruise ship.
The vessel has had several later identities, including a period as a hotel and museum ship in Rotterdam. It is distinct from Holland America’s newer cruise ships that also use “Rotterdam” in their names, particularly the current Rotterdam, which entered service in 2021.
