Which watchmaker made the first wristwatch for Caroline Murat, Queen of Naples, in 1810?

The story behind the answer

Breguet made the first wristwatch for Caroline Murat, Queen of Naples, in 1810.

Caroline Murat, Napoleon Bonaparte’s younger sister and the Queen of Naples, commissioned the unusual timepiece from Abraham-Louis Breguet. The order is recorded in Breguet’s archives and is commonly regarded as the first wristwatch made specifically for a customer.

The watch was described as an oblong, bracelet-mounted repeater. Its form was far removed from the conventional pocket watches worn by wealthy Europeans at the beginning of the nineteenth century.

This fact is often confused with the later commercial development of wristwatches. Wristwatches became widely popular much later, especially during the twentieth century, but Breguet’s 1810 commission is an early landmark in their history.
