A. Lange & Söhne introduced the Lange 1, known for its off-centre time and date displays, in 1994.
The Lange 1 was part of the brand’s first collection after its revival following German reunification. Its dial separates the hours and minutes from the small seconds display, while a large outsize date appears in a separate window.
The arrangement is asymmetrical but carefully balanced. The date display was inspired by the five-minute digital clock above the stage at the Semperoper in Dresden, according to the company’s historical account.
The Lange 1 is often confused with the brand’s later models, including the Saxonia and 1815. Those collections have different dial layouts and design purposes, while the Lange 1 is especially recognized for its decentralized displays.
