Animal Crossing: City Folk became the first Wii game to use the Wii Speak voice-chat accessory.
Wii Speak was a microphone designed for the Wii that enabled players to talk during online multiplayer. In City Folk, it supported communication between players visiting one another’s towns through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. The accessory was placed near the television and was intended to pick up voices from everyone in a room, rather than requiring each player to hold a headset microphone.
City Folk’s support for Wii Speak was one of its headline additions when the game launched in 2008. Players could communicate by voice while exploring towns, alongside text-chat and message features. The title was marketed in North America as City Folk and in PAL regions as Let’s Go to the City.
The accessory is sometimes confused with Wii MotionPlus or the Wii Balance Board, but those devices handled motion sensing and balance-based controls. Wii Speak was specifically a microphone. Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection was discontinued in 2014, so the game’s official online voice-chat service is no longer active.
