Animal Crossing: New Horizons is Wikipedia’s best-selling entry in the Animal Crossing series.

Nintendo released New Horizons for the Nintendo Switch on March 20, 2020. It is the fifth mainline Animal Crossing game and changes the familiar village setup into a deserted-island development project. Players gather materials, craft tools and furniture, shape the terrain, and gradually build a community with help from Tom Nook and other characters.

Its commercial performance quickly separated it from earlier entries. Within its first six weeks, New Horizons had surpassed the lifetime sales of every previous Animal Crossing game. Nintendo later reported tens of millions of copies sold worldwide, making it one of the Switch’s biggest titles as well as the franchise’s sales leader.

The other options were successful but sold substantially fewer copies: City Folk appeared on Wii, Wild World on Nintendo DS, and New Leaf on Nintendo 3DS. New Horizons also benefited from the Switch’s large audience and its March 2020 release, when many players were seeking social and creative activities at home.
