What was the Japanese GameCube port of the original Animal Crossing called?
Answer
Dōbutsu no Mori+
Answer
Dōbutsu no Mori+
The Japanese GameCube port of the original Animal Crossing was called Dōbutsu no Mori+.
The original Dōbutsu no Mori debuted for Nintendo 64 in Japan on April 14, 2001. Nintendo then released Dōbutsu no Mori+ for GameCube on December 14, 2001. It was an enhanced port rather than a simple conversion, adding features and taking advantage of the GameCube’s built-in clock. Nintendo later localized this GameCube version for overseas markets as Animal Crossing.
The other Japanese titles belong to different releases. Dōbutsu no Mori e+ was a later, expanded GameCube edition released in Japan in 2003. Oideyo Dōbutsu no Mori was the Japanese name for the Nintendo DS game that became Animal Crossing: Wild World internationally. Mach e Ikō yo Dōbutsu no Mori referred to the Wii entry, Animal Crossing: City Folk.
That naming history can be confusing because the series repeatedly reused Dōbutsu no Mori, meaning “Animal Forest,” with a suffix or subtitle marking each platform and edition.
