Which video-game system first hosted Pokémon Red and Green?

The story behind the answer

Pokémon Red and Green first appeared on Nintendo's Game Boy. The monochrome handheld provided the platform for the franchise's original collecting, battling, and trading adventure.

Game Freak designed the games around the Game Boy's hardware and its Link Cable. That cable allowed two players to connect separate systems and trade Pokémon or battle, making cooperation a defining part of the series. The idea was unusual because it made collecting a social activity rather than a purely single-player goal.

The original games later received versions and remakes for other Nintendo systems. Pokémon Blue and Yellow were released for the Game Boy family, while remakes such as FireRed and LeafGreen appeared on Game Boy Advance. Pokémon Stadium brought compatible creatures into a 3D battle environment on Nintendo 64, but it was not the first Pokémon platform. The Game Boy's portability, two-cartridge format, and Link Cable helped establish the formula that drove Pokémon's early success.
