Which venue hosted the inaugural London Fashion Week in 1984?

The story behind the answer

The Commonwealth Institute hosted the inaugural London Fashion Week in 1984.

The Commonwealth Institute stood in Kensington, west London, and provided the setting for the first edition of the event. Its modern exhibition spaces suited a new fashion industry showcase designed to bring British designers, buyers, journalists, and photographers together.

London Fashion Week was launched by the British Fashion Council, created the previous year. The first event helped present London’s emerging design scene as a coherent international force rather than a collection of separate labels.

The venue should not be confused with later London Fashion Week locations. Somerset House became strongly associated with the event from 2009, while other editions have used venues across the capital. The Commonwealth Institute reference specifically concerns the 1984 inaugural edition.
