Which venomous snake has the longest fangs of any snake?

The story behind the answer

The Gaboon viper has the longest fangs of any venomous snake.

The Gaboon viper, Bitis gabonica, is a large African viper known for its broad, heavily patterned head and remarkable camouflage. Its hinged fangs can reach about 55 millimetres, or roughly 2 inches, making them the longest recorded fangs among venomous snakes.

Those enormous fangs are part of an unusually effective venom-delivery system. Gaboon vipers generally rely on ambush rather than pursuit, remaining motionless on the forest floor until prey comes close. When they strike, they often hold on instead of immediately releasing the animal, allowing a substantial quantity of venom to be injected.

The species is sometimes confused with the bushmaster, another large viper with impressive fangs, or with the king cobra, which is famous for overall length rather than fang length. The Gaboon viper is also notable for producing one of the largest venom yields known among snakes, although its sluggish temperament means bites are relatively uncommon.
