Answer
Tarantula hawk
Answer
Tarantula hawk
The wasp named for hunting tarantulas with a venomous sting is the tarantula hawk.
“Tarantula hawk” is not one species but a common name applied mainly to large spider wasps in the genera Pepsis and Hemipepsis. A female searches for a tarantula, stings it to induce paralysis, and drags it to a concealed nest. She lays a single egg on the immobilized spider; the hatching larva feeds on the still-living host.
These wasps advertise their danger with striking colors, often blue-black bodies and vivid orange or rust-colored wings. Their long legs have hooked claws that help them grapple with large spiders. Some grow to about 6.5 centimetres, making them among the largest wasps.
The name can cause confusion because the wasp does not eat tarantulas as an adult and is not itself a hawk. It is a parasitoid: its young develop by consuming a host. Tarantula hawks occur on every continent except Europe and Antarctica.
