What venomous fish species has the scientific name Trachinus draco?

The story behind the answer

The venomous fish with the scientific name Trachinus draco is the greater weever.

The greater weever is a marine ray-finned fish in the family Trachinidae. It lives mainly on sandy or muddy bottoms, often burying itself with only its eyes and part of its dorsal fin exposed. From this ambush position, it attacks smaller fish and crustaceans.

Its venom is delivered through spines on the first dorsal fin and through spines on the gill covers. Accidental contact can cause severe pain and injury, which makes the fish a hazard to swimmers, anglers, and people handling nets or beach-caught fish. It is considered one of the most venomous fishes in the Mediterranean.

Trachinus draco occurs along the eastern Atlantic coast from Norway to Morocco and also inhabits the Mediterranean, Aegean, and Black seas. The name “weever” is thought to come from the Anglo-Saxon word wivre, meaning “viper.” The lesser weever is a related species, but it is not the fish identified by this scientific name.
