Which vehicle model is the classic London black cab?

The story behind the answer

Which vehicle model is the classic London black cab? Austin FX4. The Austin FX4 is widely regarded as the classic and most recognisable London taxi model. It was launched in 1958 and remained in production until 1997, passing through successive manufacturers and updates while preserving its distinctive upright shape.

The FX4 was developed for the specialist demands of London taxi work. Its compact turning circle helped it manoeuvre in tight streets, while the roomy passenger compartment and separate driver’s area suited frequent urban journeys. Its design also accommodated London’s licensing requirements, including the ability to carry passengers comfortably and handle the city’s famous taxi ranks.

The FX4 was not the only London cab. Earlier models included the Austin FX3, and later successors included the TX series and the modern LEVC TX. Nor were all London taxis literally black: advertising liveries and special colours have appeared over the years. “Black cab” describes the London taxi tradition, while the FX4 identifies the particular model that became its enduring visual icon.
