What color identifies Hong Kong's Lantau taxis?

The story behind the answer

Hong Kong’s Lantau taxis are identified by their blue color.

The blue livery distinguishes Lantau Taxis from Hong Kong’s red Urban Taxis and green New Territories Taxis. Lantau Taxis primarily operate on Lantau Island and around Chek Lap Kok, where Hong Kong International Airport is located.

Their operating area reflects geography and road access. Lantau includes relatively rural and island communities, and parts of South Lantau have vehicle restrictions that make taxi licensing especially important. Blue taxis are also permitted to serve destinations such as Tung Chung, Mui Wo, Tai O and Ngong Ping, subject to the applicable service rules.

The colors are not merely decorative branding: they indicate the taxi’s licensed territory. Red taxis cover the main urban areas, green taxis serve designated New Territories districts, and blue taxis serve Lantau-area locations. This is why a blue cab is not simply a special fare category or an airport-only taxi.
