Hong Kong's green taxis are officially named what?

The story behind the answer

Hong Kong’s green taxis are officially named New Territories Taxis.

The name refers to their principal operating area, not simply their paint color. Hong Kong’s taxi system divides service among three main types: red Urban Taxis, green New Territories Taxis and blue Lantau Taxis. These categories were created to spread taxi service beyond the most profitable urban districts.

New Territories Taxis serve designated parts of the New Territories, including areas such as Tai Po, Yuen Long, Tuen Mun and the Northern District. Their permitted routes also include certain transport interchanges and major destinations, so their operating area is not identical to every part of the New Territories.

A common mix-up is treating “green taxis” as an informal nickname with no official counterpart. The government’s formal term is New Territories Taxis. Another misconception is that they can operate everywhere in the New Territories; their licenses specify particular districts and routes.
