Aulë is the Vala known as the Smith in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium.
Aulë is associated with craftsmanship, substances of the earth, and the creation of works that require skill and patience. He is the husband of Yavanna, whose concern is living things and growing plants. Their different interests reflect Tolkien’s contrast between making objects and nurturing nature.
Aulë secretly creates the Dwarves before the awakening of the Elves. He does so because he longs for pupils who can learn his craft, but he cannot give them independent life. When Ilúvatar confronts him, Aulë submits, and Ilúvatar adopts the Dwarves into the design of the world.
Aulë should not be confused with Fëanor, the Elven craftsman who makes the Silmarils. Fëanor is a created being; Aulë is one of the Valar, the powerful spirits who enter and shape Arda.
