Which Vala is called the Smith and maker of the Dwarves in J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythology?

The story behind the answer

Aulë is the Vala called the Smith and maker of the Dwarves in J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythology.

Aulë is one of the Valar, powerful spirits who shape and govern parts of the world of Arda. He is associated with craftsmanship, substances of the earth, and the making of physical things. Desiring students who could learn his skills, he created the Dwarves before the awakening of the Elves.

Aulë did not possess the authority to give the Dwarves independent life. When Ilúvatar confronted him, Aulë repented and offered to destroy his creations. Ilúvatar accepted his humility and granted the Dwarves life, though they were required to sleep until after the Elves awoke.

Manwë is the chief of the Valar, Ulmo is associated with waters, and Tulkas is a champion and warrior. Their roles make them plausible alternatives, but none is Tolkien’s smith and maker of the Dwarves.
