Use Your Illusion II debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. It was released by Geffen Records on September 17, 1991, at the same time as its companion album, Use Your Illusion I.

The two albums immediately occupied the top two positions in the United States, with Use Your Illusion II taking the higher spot and Use Your Illusion I debuting at number two. II sold about 770,000 copies in its first week, compared with roughly 685,000 for I. Its lead single, “You Could Be Mine,” helped give the second volume especially strong visibility.

Use Your Illusion II contains major Guns N' Roses songs including “Civil War,” “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” “Estranged,” and “You Could Be Mine.” A common mix-up is assuming the first volume charted higher because it contains “November Rain”; however, the second volume was the chart leader. The album was later certified seven-times platinum in the United States.
