Which U.S. state mostly stays on Alaska Time?

The story behind the answer

The U.S. state that mostly stays on Alaska Time is Alaska.

The Alaska Time Zone covers nearly all of the state, including Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau. It uses UTC−09:00 during standard time and UTC−08:00 during daylight saving time. Alaska’s clocks are generally one hour behind Pacific Time.

Alaska is unusually wide from east to west, so it is not covered by just one time zone. The western Aleutian Islands, west of 169°30′W, use Hawaii–Aleutian Time instead. The small community of Hyder also informally follows Pacific Time because of its close connection with neighboring British Columbia.

The modern arrangement dates from 1983, when Alaska consolidated its former four time zones into two. A common mix-up is assuming that every part of Alaska uses Alaska Time; most does, but the far-western Aleutians do not.
