What UTC offset does Singapore Standard Time use year-round?
Answer
UTC+08:00
Answer
UTC+08:00
Singapore Standard Time uses a UTC offset of UTC+08:00 year-round. Singapore’s clocks are therefore eight hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time, and the country does not observe daylight saving time.
The modern offset dates from 1 January 1982, when Singapore moved its clocks forward by 30 minutes to align with Malaysia. The change was intended to simplify business, travel, and communications across the two closely connected countries.
Singapore’s time is also synchronized with several major Asian cities, including Beijing, Hong Kong, Manila, Shanghai, Taipei, Bali, and Perth. The same offset can therefore cover places with very different longitudes and national histories.
Singapore’s earlier timekeeping history was more complicated. It used GMT+07:30 for much of the postwar period, while Japanese occupation authorities imposed GMT+09:00 from 1942 to 1945. Those historical offsets should not be confused with today’s Singapore Standard Time.
