Which U.S. state is home to the groundhog General Beauregard Lee? Georgia.
General Beauregard Lee is Georgia’s best-known Groundhog Day prognosticator. He became associated with Yellow River Game Ranch in Gwinnett County, where he continued the Southern tradition of predicting an early spring or six more weeks of winter based on whether he saw his shadow.
Lee was born in 1990 and began sharing the forecasting role with the older General Robert E. Lee in 1991. He made his first solo prediction the following year. His elaborate name honors Confederate generals Robert E. Lee and P. G. T. Beauregard, a detail that can cause confusion with the groundhog’s actual Georgia home.
After Yellow River Game Ranch closed in 2017, Lee moved to Dauset Trails Nature Center in Jackson, Georgia. His antebellum-style residence there is nicknamed Weathering Heights. Georgia is therefore the canonical state answer, not one of the neighboring states listed as distractors.
