Which U.S. state is home to the Augusta National Golf Club?

The story behind the answer

Augusta National Golf Club is in Georgia, in the city of Augusta.

The private club occupies the grounds of a former plant nursery and was founded by golfing legend Bobby Jones and investment banker Clifford Roberts. Jones worked with architect Alister MacKenzie to create the course, which opened for play in 1932; the club was formally established in 1933.

Augusta National is best known as the permanent home of the Masters Tournament, one of golf’s four men’s major championships. The tournament normally takes place each spring and is famous for its azaleas, dogwoods, fast greens, and distinctive holes such as Amen Corner.

The nearby states in the choices are easy to confuse geographically, but none is correct. Florida is southeast of Georgia, Alabama is to the west, and South Carolina lies across the Savannah River from Augusta. The city itself sits on Georgia’s eastern border.
