The state is also closely tied to Walmart’s modern expansion story. Walmart began in Rogers, Arkansas, in 1962, then spread throughout the United States. Texas became one of the company’s largest operating footprints, with stores ranging from major metropolitan areas such as Houston, Dallas–Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Austin to smaller communities.

A common mix-up is Arkansas, where Walmart is headquartered and where Sam Walton opened the first Walmart. Arkansas is historically central to the company, but it does not have the most stores. Florida and California also rank highly, yet Texas remains ahead.
