Which U.S. state became Georgia O'Keeffe's longtime home and major artistic subject?

The story behind the answer

New Mexico became Georgia O'Keeffe's longtime home and a major artistic subject.

O'Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1929 and returned regularly before moving there permanently in 1949. She was drawn to the state's intense light, cliffs, adobe architecture, desert plants, and animal bones, all of which became recurring elements in her paintings.

Her homes at Ghost Ranch and Abiquiú provided distinctive surroundings for both daily life and artistic work. Paintings such as those of the Pedernal, a prominent mesa, transformed specific New Mexican places into repeated visual motifs.

New Mexico did not replace her interest in flowers or abstraction, but it gave those interests a new setting. O'Keeffe spent her later decades there and died in Santa Fe in 1986, making the state central to both her biography and her artistic legacy.
