At which Texas college did Georgia O'Keeffe teach before becoming a full-time artist?
Answer
West Texas State Normal College
Answer
West Texas State Normal College
Georgia O'Keeffe taught at West Texas State Normal College before becoming a full-time artist. The institution, located in Canyon, Texas, is now known as West Texas A&M University.
She taught art there from 1916 to 1918. During that period, she continued developing the abstract drawings that attracted Alfred Stieglitz's attention and made her first visit to New Mexico in 1917.
O'Keeffe left the college after accepting a position at the University of Texas at Austin. Her teaching career ended in 1918, when she moved to New York and began working more directly within the city's modernist art world. The Texas years were therefore both professional teaching years and a crucial stage in her artistic development.
