Microsoft owns Azure and became a $1 trillion market-cap company in 2019.
Microsoft passed the $1 trillion valuation threshold in April 2019 after reporting strong quarterly results. The company’s market value reflected its transition from a business centered on Windows and boxed software toward recurring cloud and subscription revenue.
Azure is Microsoft’s cloud-computing service, providing computing power, storage, databases, analytics, and other tools over the internet. Growth in Azure helped convince investors that Microsoft could compete with Amazon Web Services and build a durable enterprise platform.
Microsoft’s other major businesses include Office, Windows, LinkedIn, Xbox, and Surface. Its 2019 trillion-dollar milestone came after Apple and Amazon had already crossed the same threshold, so it was third among U.S. technology giants to do so.
