Tesla reached a $1 trillion market capitalization in October 2021, becoming the sixth U.S. company to reach that level.
Tesla’s valuation rose sharply as investors anticipated expanding electric-vehicle production, growing demand, and increased deliveries. A major boost came when Hertz announced an order for 100,000 Tesla vehicles in October 2021, although the market-cap milestone reflected broader expectations as well.
Tesla was founded in 2003 and initially focused on proving that battery-powered cars could be desirable and commercially viable. Its Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y helped establish the company as a major electric-vehicle manufacturer.
Tesla’s market capitalization has often been much larger than that of traditional automakers relative to vehicle production. Investors have valued it not only as a carmaker, but also for battery technology, software, charging infrastructure, and potential autonomous-driving businesses.
