Which US battleship was famously sunk during the attack on Pearl Harbor?

The story behind the answer

The US battleship famously sunk during the attack on Pearl Harbor was USS Arizona.

On December 7, 1941, Japanese aircraft attacked the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Arizona was struck by several armor-piercing bombs, and one triggered a catastrophic explosion in the ship's forward ammunition magazine. The blast destroyed much of the bow and sank the battleship within minutes.

A total of 1,177 officers and crewmen aboard Arizona were killed, making it the deadliest single-ship loss in the attack. Unlike several other damaged battleships, Arizona was never returned to service because the destruction was too severe. Its wreck remains on the harbor floor as a war grave.

The USS Arizona Memorial was built across the wreck in 1962. Visitors can still see oil—often called the ship's “black tears”—rising from the submerged hull. Arizona is sometimes confused with USS Oklahoma, another battleship lost at Pearl Harbor, but Oklahoma was later salvaged and scrapped, while Arizona remains beneath the memorial.
