Which US aircraft carrier was sunk during the Battle of Midway?
Answer
USS Yorktown
Answer
USS Yorktown
USS Yorktown was the US aircraft carrier sunk during the Battle of Midway in June 1942.
Yorktown had already been badly damaged in the Battle of the Coral Sea, but American crews repaired her in just three days so she could join the defense of Midway Atoll. During the battle, Japanese aircraft hit the carrier with bombs and torpedoes, leaving her listing and apparently abandoned. Salvage crews later attempted to tow her away.
On 6 June, the Japanese submarine I-168 reached the damaged carrier and fired a spread of torpedoes. Two struck Yorktown, while another hit and sank the destroyer USS Hammann, which was assisting the salvage effort. Yorktown finally capsized and sank on 7 June 1942.
A common mix-up is USS Enterprise, which fought at Midway and survived. USS Hornet also took part and survived, while USS Wasp was not present at the battle. The victory at Midway destroyed four Japanese fleet carriers and shifted the Pacific War's momentum toward the United States.
