Before version 1.1.2, the online random option favored traditional three-lap races on one of the game’s 30 courses. The update expanded that selection by adding 202 intermission courses, which are the connecting routes between major race locations.
The change affected how online sessions felt because the intermission routes are generally more highway-like than the dedicated circuits. Players subsequently criticized the random selection for favoring those routes too heavily, leading Nintendo to adjust the behavior in the version 1.3.0 update.
The numbers describe different course types: 30 refers to the traditional courses available in the earlier random pool, while 202 refers to the intermission additions. Version 1.1.2 is the update associated with the original expansion.
