Answer
Geisel Library
Answer
Geisel Library
The famous Brutalist university library shaped like a spaceship is Geisel Library.
Geisel Library is the main library of the University of California, San Diego. Designed by architect William Pereira and his firm, it opened in 1970 as the Central Library. Its dramatic reinforced-concrete structure rises above the campus like a futuristic spacecraft, with broad projecting forms and angular supports that give it an almost weightless appearance.
The building occupies an unusual position between Brutalism and Futurism. Pereira originally considered a mushroom-shaped steel design, but high costs and postwar material pressures led to a reinforced-concrete solution. The resulting structure is about 110 feet tall, has eight floors and was designed around the university’s growing collections and study needs.
It was renamed in 1995 to honour Audrey and Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. The library holds the university’s Dr. Seuss Collection, including drawings, notebooks, manuscripts and other archival material. The popular “spaceship” description is informal, but it reflects the building’s unmistakably futuristic silhouette.
