Which university is Stephen Hawking most associated with?

The story behind the answer

Stephen Hawking is most associated with the University of Cambridge. Although he earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Oxford, Cambridge became the central institution of his scientific career and public identity.

Hawking began postgraduate research at Cambridge in 1962 and earned his PhD there in 1966. His work focused on general relativity, cosmology, black holes, and the origins of the universe. He later held several Cambridge positions, including the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, a chair once held by Isaac Newton.

From 1979 to 2009, Hawking served as Lucasian Professor, one of the world's most prestigious academic posts. He then continued at Cambridge as director of research in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. This is why Cambridge is the expected answer, even though Oxford was also an important part of his education.

A common mix-up is to confuse the university where Hawking studied as an undergraduate with the university most closely linked to his research career. Oxford awarded his BA in physics; Cambridge awarded his doctorate and became his long-term academic home.
