Which nurse became Stephen Hawking's second wife in 1995?
Answer
Elaine Mason
Answer
Elaine Mason
Elaine Mason became Stephen Hawking's second wife in 1995.
Mason was one of the nurses who cared for Hawking after a severe bout of pneumonia in 1985 led to a tracheotomy and the loss of his natural speaking voice. Hawking required round-the-clock nursing, and Mason joined the team providing that care. She had previously been married to David Mason, a computer engineer who helped adapt Hawking's early speech-computer system.
Hawking's first marriage, to Jane Wilde, began in 1965 and produced three children. The couple separated in 1990 and divorced in 1995; Hawking married Elaine Mason in September of that year. Their marriage ended in divorce in 2006, after which Hawking renewed closer relationships with Jane, his children and grandchildren.
A common mix-up is to identify Jane Wilde as Hawking's second wife. She was his first wife and later wrote memoirs about their marriage, including the book that inspired the film The Theory of Everything.
