Stephen Hawking was a Sherman Fairchild Distinguished Visiting Professor at Caltech in 1974.
Caltech is short for the California Institute of Technology, a private research university in Pasadena, California. Hawking's appointment brought him into close contact with Caltech's community of relativists and astrophysicists, including Kip Thorne, who became a major scientific collaborator and friend. Hawking maintained ties with Caltech for decades and reportedly returned for visits almost every year after his first appointment.
The 1974 visit came during a pivotal period in Hawking's career. That year he argued that black holes emit what is now called Hawking radiation, a prediction linking quantum theory, gravity and thermodynamics. He was also elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, one of Britain's highest scientific honors.
The title can be confused with Hawking's later Cambridge positions. He became Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge in 1979, but that was a separate appointment. The quiz asks specifically about the 1974 visiting professorship, making Caltech the canonical answer.
