Which university employed C.S. Lewis as a professor from 1954 until his death?
Answer
Cambridge University
Answer
Cambridge University
Cambridge University employed C.S. Lewis as a professor from 1954 until his death.
In 1954, Lewis became the first holder of the newly established Chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at Magdalene College, Cambridge. He had previously spent most of his academic career at Oxford, where he was a tutor and fellow of Magdalen College. His move to Cambridge did not end his connection with Oxford, but it gave him a new formal professorship.
Lewis held the Cambridge chair until his death in 1963. His academic work focused on English literature, especially medieval and Renaissance writing. The two institutions can easily be confused because Lewis’s reputation is strongly associated with Oxford, his longtime home and the setting of much of his professional life. The relevant distinction is that Cambridge employed him as a professor.
