Which university did J.K. Rowling attend after studying French and Classics?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling attended the University of Exeter after studying French and Classics.

Rowling enrolled at Exeter in 1983 and completed her degree in 1987. Her studies included French, and she spent part of her course in Paris. The experience later became part of the biographical background often discussed when examining her interest in languages and European settings.

After university, Rowling worked in several roles, including research and bilingual-secretary work. She later moved to Portugal, where she taught English and married Portuguese television journalist Jorge Arantes. She returned to the United Kingdom in the early 1990s.

Rowling’s university is sometimes confused with the University of Edinburgh because Edinburgh became strongly associated with her writing career and public life. She wrote parts of the early Harry Potter books in Scotland, but Exeter is the university she attended.
