In the Harry Potter novels, which Hogwarts house does Harry Potter join?

The story behind the answer

In J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels, Harry Potter joins Gryffindor.

The Sorting Hat places Harry in Gryffindor during the welcoming feast in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Gryffindor is one of the four Hogwarts houses, alongside Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff. The house is associated especially with courage, nerve, and chivalry.

Harry’s close friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger are also sorted into Gryffindor. Their house becomes the main student community opposing Lord Voldemort and his followers throughout the series. Harry briefly worries about being placed in Slytherin because the Sorting Hat detects qualities that could fit that house.

A common mix-up is to identify Harry with Slytherin because of his connection to Voldemort and his ability to speak Parseltongue. However, the final decision is Gryffindor, influenced partly by Harry’s own strong wish not to join Slytherin.
