Which university awarded C.S. Lewis the position of Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature in 1954?

The story behind the answer

Cambridge University awarded C.S. Lewis the position of Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature in 1954.

Lewis became the first holder of the Cambridge chair, formally joining Magdalene College, Cambridge, after many years teaching at Oxford. The appointment recognized his scholarly work in medieval and Renaissance literature as well as his public reputation as an author and Christian thinker.

He continued to live in Oxford and did not abandon his earlier academic connections there. This arrangement can cause confusion: Lewis held his Cambridge professorship while maintaining his Oxford home and long-standing Oxford associations.

His Cambridge lectureship lasted until his death in 1963. The post also placed him in the same broad university world as other major twentieth-century scholars, although his public fame extended far beyond academic literary studies.
