Which university awarded C.S. Lewis a first-class degree in English in 1923?

The story behind the answer

Oxford University awarded C.S. Lewis a first-class degree in English in 1923.

Lewis studied at University College, Oxford, after serving in the First World War. His academic path was unusually broad: he first completed examinations in Greek and Latin literature, philosophy, and ancient history, then studied English. He gained a first-class result in English in 1923.

This achievement helped establish the scholarly foundation for his later work as a medieval and Renaissance literature specialist. He taught at Oxford for many years before becoming a professor of Medieval and Renaissance English at Cambridge.

The answer is sometimes shortened to Oxford, but the institution is formally the University of Oxford. Cambridge was also central to Lewis’s career, yet he moved there only in 1954 for his Cambridge professorship. University College was his Oxford college, not a separate university.
