Which university appointed C.S. Lewis to its chair of medieval and Renaissance literature?
Answer
University of Cambridge
Answer
University of Cambridge
The University of Cambridge appointed C.S. Lewis to its chair of medieval and Renaissance literature. He took up the position in 1954 and held it until his retirement in 1963.
Before Cambridge, Lewis spent most of his academic career at the University of Oxford. He was a Fellow and tutor at Magdalen College, Oxford, from 1925 until 1954, teaching English literature and developing a reputation as a medieval and Renaissance specialist.
The Cambridge chair gave Lewis a major academic post while he was already internationally known as a Christian writer and author of The Chronicles of Narnia. His scholarship continued alongside his popular writing.
Lewis’s Cambridge appointment is sometimes confused with his Oxford career because Oxford remained central to his life and friendships. He continued living near Oxford after moving to Cambridge for his academic work.
