Which university appointed C.S. Lewis to a chair in 1954?
Answer
Cambridge University
Answer
Cambridge University
Cambridge University appointed C.S. Lewis to a chair in 1954.
In 1954, Lewis became the first holder of the newly established chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at Magdalene College, Cambridge. The appointment marked his move from Oxford, where he had taught at Magdalen College since 1925.
The Cambridge position suited Lewis’s major scholarly interests, which included medieval literature, Renaissance writing, allegory, and the history of English literature. His academic work continued alongside his popular writing about Christianity and his fiction for adults and children.
Lewis did not abandon Oxford after moving to Cambridge. He retained strong Oxford friendships and continued visiting the city, while The Kilns remained his Oxford home. The two universities are therefore both important in his biography: Oxford was the setting for his long first academic career, and Cambridge became the setting for his final university appointment.
