Unicode 9.0 introduced the first 72 new emoji, including Selfie and Face With Cowboy Hat.
Released in 2016, Unicode 9.0 added a broad group of pictorial characters to the standard. The additions covered people, gestures, animals, food, travel symbols and other subjects, making the release especially visible to everyday phone users.
Selfie became a recognizable example of changing technology and communication habits, while Face With Cowboy Hat added a playful expression to the growing face-emoji set. Other additions included Shrug, Person in Tuxedo and several animal and food symbols.
A Unicode release does not instantly place artwork on every phone. Vendors must implement the new characters in fonts and emoji graphics, and applications must support them. Unicode 8.0 and Unicode 10.0 also added emoji, so the release number is important when identifying this particular group of 72.
