Which Unicode version introduced the emoji for a face with monocle?
Answer
Unicode 10.0
Answer
Unicode 10.0
Unicode 10.0 introduced the face with monocle emoji, officially named FACE WITH MONOCLE.
Unicode Standard version 10.0 was released on 20 June 2017. Its emoji additions included FACE WITH MONOCLE, STAR-STRUCK, EXPLODING HEAD, SHUSHING FACE, and several fantasy and food characters. FACE WITH MONOCLE typically shows one eye enlarged behind a monocle and is used for scrutiny, sophistication, surprise or playful suspicion.
The character is often casually called “the monocle emoji,” but Unicode’s canonical wording is FACE WITH MONOCLE. Emoji names and visual designs are separate: Unicode standardizes the encoded character and name, while Apple, Google, Microsoft and other vendors draw their own versions.
It is also easy to confuse the Unicode release with the later date when a particular operating system added the emoji. Platform rollout schedules varied, so users may have encountered the symbol after 2017 even though its Unicode definition belongs to version 10.0.
