Which unfinished J.R.R. Tolkien story was published as a standalone book in 2007 by Christopher Tolkien?

The story behind the answer

The unfinished J.R.R. Tolkien story published as a standalone book in 2007 was The Children of Húrin.

Christopher Tolkien edited the book from his father’s writings, with illustrations by Alan Lee. It presents the tragic story of Túrin Turambar and his sister Nienor during the First Age, when Morgoth dominated much of Beleriand. The narrative had appeared in shorter or incomplete forms in earlier posthumous publications, but the 2007 edition offered a continuous version.

Tolkien worked on the story for many years and developed it in prose, verse, and changing drafts. Because no final author-approved manuscript existed, Christopher had to compare versions and identify how the fragments fit together.

The title is sometimes confused with The Fall of Gondolin or Beren and Lúthien, two other major First Age tales later edited into standalone volumes. Unfinished Tales is also related, but it is a collection rather than the specific expanded narrative published in 2007.
