Shark Tank is the direct American adaptation of Dragons' Den. The US series premiered on ABC in 2009 and uses the same central idea: entrepreneurs present companies to wealthy investors while seeking capital for equity.
The British programme itself is based on the Japanese format Money Tigers. When the concept was produced for American television, the investors became “sharks” rather than “dragons,” and the title changed accordingly. The negotiation structure remained recognisable across the versions.
Both shows ask founders to discuss sales, profit, valuation and ownership. Investors can make individual offers, combine with other panel members or decline to participate. The drama comes from the contrast between the founder’s requested terms and the investors’ assessment of risk and opportunity.
The two programmes are related formats, not the same broadcast. They have separate presenters, investor panels and national production histories, even though viewers often compare their pitches and deal-making styles.
