Which Ubisoft studio led development of the first Assassin's Creed game?

The story behind the answer

Ubisoft Montreal led development of the first Assassin's Creed game.

The Montreal studio developed the original title for Ubisoft, building on ideas and technology associated with the Prince of Persia series. The project evolved into a new open-world action game centered on stealth, parkour, historical settings and a conflict between Assassins and Templars.

Ubisoft Montreal is based in Montreal, Quebec, and became one of the principal studios behind the Assassin's Creed franchise. Its work on the first game established systems that later entries expanded, including climbing, social stealth, investigation missions and historically inspired city design.

Other Ubisoft studios have led later entries. Ubisoft Quebec developed Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Assassin's Creed Syndicate, while Ubisoft Sofia developed Assassin's Creed Rogue. Those studios are linked to the series, but they were not the lead developer of the original game.
