Which Ubisoft studio developed the original Assassin's Creed?

The story behind the answer

Ubisoft Montreal developed the original Assassin's Creed.

The Montreal studio created the game as a new action-adventure property for Ubisoft, building a historical world around stealth, parkour, investigation, and social blending. Its design drew on earlier ideas from the Prince of Persia series, but Assassin's Creed introduced its own mythology, including the conflict between Assassins and Templars and the modern Animus framework.

The original game follows Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad during the Third Crusade, while Desmond Miles experiences Altaïr's memories in the present day. Ubisoft Montreal continued to lead development of several major entries, including Assassin's Creed II, Assassin's Creed III, and Assassin's Creed Origins.

Other Ubisoft studios later led important games. Ubisoft Quebec developed Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Syndicate, while Ubisoft Sofia worked on Liberation and contributed to other projects. These studios are sometimes confused because the franchise has used a large multinational development structure.
